Menopause indicates the complete or permanent cessation of menstruation. The transition from a woman’s reproductive to non-reproductive years takes 2-5 years. This usually begins between the ages of 48 -55, with the median age being 51. A woman’s lifestyle and dietary habits from childhood onwards determines how easy this transition will be. Thus any detrimental lifestyle habits a woman has will influence that woman’s reproductive system.
During menopause, follicle activity decreases and eventually stops, and the lack of estrogen causes the menses to cease. Not only is there a lack of estrogen, but because menstruation ceases so does ovulation- no ovulation means no progesterone.
The severity of problems a woman experiences during menopause is determined by her lifestyle as mentioned above. Some of the problems that are experienced include: headaches, tiredness, lethargy, anxiety, nervousness, depression, insomnia, inability to concentrate, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and sweating. Most, if not all, of these symptoms can be treated with acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and lifestyle and dietary therapy to help a woman sail through this transition.
